PhotoVoice is a charity with a mission to build skills within disadvantaged and marginalised communities. They use innovative participatory photography and digital storytelling methods so that these communities have the opportunity to represent themselves and create tools for advocacy and communications to achieve positive social change.
Yesterday I spent the day with PV learning how to facilitate those kind of photography workshops. It was an amazing experience led by an amazing and compassionate charity that are making a huge difference to people’s lives.
Quite often when making art it can feel redundant when you don’t work through to ‘shipping it’ i.e. giving it an audience through exhibition or publication etc..
Quite often, making a point you have through photography about a social situation or a cool idea you have, can feel pathetically indulgent and unfinished.
Photovoice is really leveraging the strength of the medium and not only producing great photography, but pushing the medium much further and achieving incredible life changing outcomes for people.
